2003 Howell Mountain Napa Valley Merlot
Harvest Notes
The 2003 growing season was marked by a cool, wet spring. As summer approached, carryover moisture resulted in vigorous vine growth. A heat spike at the early part of flowering caused some shatter that resulted in reduced yields. Summer and early fall were relatively mild, but a flourish of heat at the latter part of harvest accelerated the ripening of fruit. The season ended with an extended mild period, allowing harvest to conclude at a relaxed pace.
Comments from the Winemaker
This Howell Mountain bottling has great texture and structure, mouth-filling, yet integrated tannins, and a lingering finish. The bouquet offers layered aromas of cassis, leather, dried fruit and molasses, with subtle hints of jasmine. On the palate, the flavors display rich black cherry, currant, pomegranate, and plum notes, complemented by elements of maple, vanilla, and spicy black pepper.
